United Airlines unveils new Economy Plus seating with extra elbow room and an open middle seat table on the Airbus A321XLR
United Airlines introduces a new Economy Plus seating concept with an open middle seat and shared table on its Airbus A321XLR aircraft.

United Airlines is giving economy passengers a little more room to breathe with a new seating concept designed for its upcoming Airbus A321XLR aircraft.

The airline has revealed plans for a special Economy Plus row featuring open middle seats that are transformed into shared spaces with large, custom-designed tables. The idea is simple: passengers sitting by the window or aisle get more elbow room and additional personal space, something that could make a noticeable difference on longer international flights.

More Space Without Moving to Business Class

Instead of selling the middle seat, United will use the space for a permanently installed table stretching between the window and aisle seats.

The table will feature a soft, leather-like surface and two built-in cup indentations. Combined with the additional legroom already available in Economy Plus, the new layout aims to create a more comfortable experience for travelers who want extra space without booking a premium cabin.

United plans to install the seating option across all 50 Airbus A321XLR aircraft currently on order. The airline is also considering whether a similar concept could be introduced on other aircraft in the future.

United Continues to Rethink Economy Travel

The new Economy Plus design follows the recently announced United Relax Row, another economy-focused concept designed to turn multiple seats into a couch-like surface.

Together, these new products show United’s growing focus on offering passengers more choices across different cabins.

Andrew Nocella, United’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, said the airline is investing throughout its fleet to provide customers with greater choice and value.

A More Premium Airbus A321XLR

United’s Airbus A321XLR is being positioned as a premium narrowbody aircraft for international short- and medium-haul routes.

The aircraft will feature 32 premium seats, including United Polaris lie-flat suites with direct aisle access and privacy doors.

Passengers throughout the aircraft will also have access to 4K OLED entertainment screens with Bluetooth connectivity. Screen sizes will vary by cabin, with larger displays in Polaris and Premium Plus and 13-inch screens in United Economy.

Other upgrades include larger overhead bins designed to accommodate rollaboard luggage and a snack bar located at the rear of the economy cabin.

When Will the New Economy Plus Seats Be Available?

United expects the new extra-elbow-room Economy Plus option to go on sale later in 2026. Pricing and additional booking details are expected to be announced closer to launch.

The airline plans to begin domestic Airbus A321XLR flights later this fall, while international service is expected to start by early 2027.

For passengers who often struggle with limited space in economy, United’s latest seating concept could offer an interesting middle ground between standard economy and expensive premium cabins.
